Abstract

Given the severity of socio-environmental problems and the inexorable degradation of the ecosystems that sustain life, this article focuses on systematizing the relationship between socio-environmental problems and their treatment through participatory action—both individual and collective—while emphasizing the educational nature of this process across the board. To carry out this task, an exploratory literature review was conducted, which revealed the complexity of socio-environmental problems and the generalist nature of addressing these issues from a citizen participation perspective. In light of this situation, and with an educational aim, the article as a whole proposes approaches to citizen participation to facilitate debates and collective interventions centered on the environment as a context for participation, in addition to describing and understanding socio-environmental problems and the actors involved in their management and resolution. It also highlights key points for fostering citizen participation and the importance of the outcomes of this process for strengthening trust in collective action. The article concludes by noting the current challenges for social participation in a context of socio-environmental crisis, particularly the climate emergency.
